COVID-19 Disrupts Visa Services in China: What US Citizens Sponsoring a Spouse or Fiance Need to Know

If you are a US citizen looking to sponsor your spouse or fiance for a visa, you may be feeling frustrated and anxious about the recent announcement that the US Embassy and Consulates in China are suspending routine visa services due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We understand that these developments may cause delays and uncertainty in your plans to reunite with your loved one. However, please know that we are here to support you and provide guidance on the next steps to take in your immigration journey.

At this time, the Embassy in Beijing and the Consulate General in Shanghai are only providing passport and emergency citizen services. The Consulates General in Wuhan, Shenyang, and Guangzhou are also only providing emergency consular services until further notice. If you have already applied for a Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV), you can reschedule your appointment for a later date by following the instructions on the US Travel Docs website. Immigrant Visa (IV) applicants with questions should contact the Immigrant Visa Unit at the US Embassy in China.

In the meantime, we recommend that you stay up to date on the latest developments by registering for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at the provided link. This will allow you to receive updates and messages from the US Mission in China.

We understand that these are challenging times, but please know that we are here to support you and will provide updates as they become available.
